Products: CYA & Networker – Myth vs. Fact
Read EMC's Solution Overview for CYA SmartRecovery, NetWorker, & Centera
Myth:
CYA SmartRecovery performs the same functions as EMC Networker and Networker Module for Documentum (NMD).
Fact:
EMC Networker and Networker NMD protect against system and site disasters affecting an entire system infrastructure including operating systems, applications, and data, whether the data is from a SAP, CRM or ECM system.
CYA SmartRecovery does not protect against system and site disasters – it provides object recovery for logical errors that occur within the Documentum repository, which may be caused by user and programmatic errors, malfeasance, viruses or corruption. When a logical error occurs, CYA SmartRecovery quickly recovers the lost content and metadata back into the Documentum repository to its original state, without any Documentum downtime.

Myth:
NMD provides object-level recovery.
Fact:
NMD can recover the database, content and indices for the entire Documentum repository, but it does not recover granular content and metadata (objects) directly back into the repository or maintain their authenticity. CYA SmartRecovery recovers objects directly back into the repository while validating and preserving the original relationships between the content and metadata.

Myth:
CYA SmartRecovery provides disaster recovery (DR) functionality, and rolls back the entire system including the operating system, applications, and Documentum data.
Fact:
CYA SmartRecovery does not provide DR functionality – it enhances existing recovery solutions such as EMC NetWorker, Symantec Veritas NetBackup and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager by reducing the data loss window for the Documentum repository to within 15 minutes. It does this by enabling enterprises to roll forward from the last full system backup to the most recent CYA capture of the repository. All Documentum deployments are supported, regardless of the DR strategy in place.

Myth:
CYA SmartRecovery and NMD both perform the same functions while in “hot” (live) mode.
Fact:
NMD provides “hot” backups of the entire Documentum repository, including the databases, content and indices, in order to support recovery from system failures and natural disasters. CYA SmartRecovery performs “hot” captures of the objects within the repository, and validates the integrity of the content and its associated metadata to support recovery from logical errors.
